Everyone uses Skype, but few decide to take some precautions in order to ensure them selfs less problems in the future. It is only when they encounter the problem they start to think about it. In this article we will take a look at few quick things you can do to ensure the safety of your Skype data. Just search in Google for something like lost skype contacts, lost skype password or lost skype history and you will see how many people have had these kinds of problems.
Backup your Skype contacts
Since Skype version 1.2 all contact data is stored on Skype servers and not on your computer. This provides you easy access from any computer and also ensures that your contacts are safe even after complete format of your hard drive. So in theory you don’t need to backup them at all, but only in theory though.
Many people are complaining from lost Skype contacts. The contacts are probably not actually lost in most cases, but for some reason Skype cannot load them. So the safe thing to do is to do a quick backup once in a while.
To backup your Skype contacts simply sign in with your Skype name and password and go to the menus Contacts -> Advanced -> Backup contacts to file…(for older versions the path is Tools -> Advanced -> Backup contacts to file…). There you can save a file with your contacts for future restoring.
Backup your Skype chat history
As we said, your contacts are stored on Skype servers, but this is not the case for your chat history. It is located on your computer in a special folder. If you re-install Windows and format the drive, you will loose your history.
If your Skype history is important to you, make a copy of its files. You will probably need to do this regularly, since the chat history is constantly changing.
To backup your chat history in Skype simply open Windows Explorer and type in the address bar %appdata%, press Enter and then make a copy of the Skype folder. Keep the copy safe. If you need to restore it, just replace the folder with your copy.
Remember your Skype password and email
It is up to you to decide if you want to save your password in a file somewhere on the computer or on a note somewhere in the real world. Or you can just remember it of course.
Whatever you decide keep in mind that the only way to get a new Skype password is via your Skype email. I have seen people that do not even remember the email they have registered with, and when someone steals their password, or if they forget it, they just have no way to recover it and their account is lost forever.
If you have lost your Skype password and you know your email, you can get a new one from the official Skype website at this page: Reset your Skype password.
